PEMF Therapy: What It Is and How It Works
PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field. A PEMF device generates a magnetic field that pulses on and off, and during a session that field passes through the area of the body resting on or near the applicator. People book PEMF sessions to support relaxation, everyday comfort, and mobility. Our sessions run on the PULSE XL Pro, a professional solid-state system with a pulse strong enough to feel as a slow, rhythmic thump in the tissue.
That is the honest one-paragraph answer. The rest of this page covers how a session actually works, what the research record really shows with named studies you can check, the FDA facts stated precisely, and how field work fits alongside hands-on SomaVeda® Thai Yoga bodywork.
The letters, plainly
Your body already runs on small electrical signals. Nerves fire, muscles contract, the heart keeps time, all with a little bioelectricity. A PEMF device sits beside that reality: it creates a magnetic field that switches on and off in pulses, from coils inside an applicator placed on or near the body. Unlike a static magnet, which holds one steady field, the pulsing is the whole point. The published research on PEMF is research on pulsed fields specifically.
Two very different worlds share the PEMF name, and most websites blur them. One is the prescription medical world: physician-prescribed bone-growth stimulators the FDA has cleared for narrow uses since 1979. The other is the wellness world: sessions like ours, offered for relaxation and everyday comfort, on equipment that is not an FDA-cleared medical device. We keep that line bright because trust is worth more than a sale.
What a session looks like here
You rest, clothed and comfortable. Applicators from the PULSE XL Pro are placed on or near the areas we agreed on. When the session starts you feel the pulse arrive as a slow, steady thump, strong enough to notice and easy to relax into. Sessions run 30 to 60 minutes. Most people describe the time as deeply settling; plenty doze off.
The PULSE XL Pro is built on solid-state technology, and its output is in a different class from the consumer mats sold online. In a session that difference is simple: a pulse you can clearly feel rather than one you have to take on faith.
A heads up on location: some of our equipment is relocating from Natural Wellness Solutions in Brooksville to a new home. Every session stays available, and we confirm your session location when you book.
A PEMF session is $150, or $85 for your first. It stacks well before or after SomaVeda® Thai Yoga bodywork, the far infrared sauna, or mHBOT. Book a session or read the full first-visit walkthrough.
What the research actually says
We publish our full research library and we quote studies as studies, never as promises. The PEMF literature, honestly summarized: the strongest signals are in joint comfort and everyday function, several results are mixed, and some are null. Here is the record.
- A 2020 meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials in Physical Therapy reported PEMF was associated with short-term improvements in joint comfort, stiffness, and physical function in people with osteoarthritis (Yang 2020, PMID 32251502).
- A 2019 systematic review in the Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine found PEMF was associated with improved physical function in knee osteoarthritis, without a clear advantage for pain or stiffness (Chen 2019, PMID 31583420).
- A 2016 systematic review of randomized trials reported PEMF was associated with reduced pain intensity and improved function in low-back discomfort, while calling for larger studies (Andrade 2016, PMID 32258569).
- Randomized controlled trials add texture: a double-blind placebo-controlled trial in Rheumatology associated a month of daily wearable PEMF with reduced knee discomfort and better function (Bagnato 2016, PMID 26705327), and 2024 and 2025 trials associated PEMF added to exercise or physical therapy with greater improvement than sham (Hashemi 2024, PMID 40270637; Comino-Suárez 2025, PMID 39868691).
- The honest other side: a 2022 placebo-controlled trial found PEMF no better than placebo for pain in the hours after appendix surgery (Perumal 2022, PMID 36242089), and a 2024 systematic review concluded available trials did not support PEMF for speeding acute fracture healing (Picelli 2024, PMID 39387850).
- Mechanism research describes proposed cellular pathways, such as adenosine-receptor signaling (Varani 2017, PMID 28255202) and skeletal cell responses (Cadossi 2020, PMID 33970582). Lab findings explain how a field might act on cells. They are not evidence that a session treats anything.
For the full walk-through of every study, including how to read tiers of evidence, see the PEMF evidence review.
A short, precise history
PEMF is not new. Building on Dr. C. Andrew Bassett's fracture research in the 1970s, the FDA approved the first pulsed electromagnetic field bone-growth stimulator in November 1979, for fractures that had failed to heal (history reviewed in PMC6209359). Those prescription devices remain in clinical use today, including in spinal-fusion care (Foley 2008, PMID 17983841).
NASA studied the territory too: a 2003 NASA Johnson Space Center report by Thomas Goodwin examined time-varying electromagnetic fields on human neural cell cultures in the laboratory (NASA/TP-2003-212054). Cell-culture research, worth knowing about, and not a clinical claim.
Where PEMF fits in a whole-person practice
Most places offering PEMF are device vendors. We are a working practice with a lineage: the heart of our practice is SomaVeda® Thai Yoga, hands-on traditional bodywork, and the technology serves the hands, not the other way around. A field session helps a guarded body settle and unwind. Then the bodywork goes to work on the sen lines with time, pressure, and breath. Members who book a Therapeutic Day often stack PEMF with bodywork, sauna, and mHBOT into one long exhale.
That pairing, and why we think the order matters, gets its own page: why we pair PEMF with Thai Yoga bodywork.
PEMF questions, answered straight
What does PEMF stand for? +
PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field. A PEMF device generates a magnetic field that switches on and off in pulses, rather than holding steady like an ordinary magnet. Sessions are sometimes called PEMF therapy, pulsed magnetic therapy, or pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. They all mean the same thing.
Is PEMF FDA approved? +
Precisely: the FDA has cleared specific prescription PEMF devices for specific medical uses, beginning in 1979 with bone-growth stimulators for fractures that failed to heal. Those are physician-prescribed medical devices. Consumer and wellness PEMF equipment, including what wellness studios like ours use, is not an FDA-cleared medical device, and we never present it as one.
What does a PEMF session feel like? +
On the PULSE XL Pro, the pulse is strong enough to feel: a slow, rhythmic thump in the tissue, like a drumbeat you can relax into. It is not painful and not electrical-feeling. Most people find it deeply settling, and some doze off.
How long is a PEMF session? +
A PEMF session with us runs 30 to 60 minutes. You rest, the applicators sit on or near the body, and the device does the work.
How many sessions do people do? +
There is no fixed number, and anyone who promises results in exactly X sessions is guessing. Some members book PEMF as an occasional add-on to bodywork. Others make it a regular part of their recovery routine. We suggest trying one, seeing how your body responds, and deciding from there.
Is PEMF safe? Who should skip it? +
PEMF sessions are easy and well tolerated for most people. If you have a pacemaker or any implanted electronic device, or you are pregnant, tell us first and we will point you to a better fit. When in doubt, ask your physician.
Is PEMF the same as lying on magnets? +
No. A static magnet holds one steady field. A PEMF device pulses its field, and the pulsing is the point: the research literature on PEMF is specifically about pulsed fields, not static magnets.
What does a PEMF session cost? +
At Healing Warrior Arts in Brooksville, a PEMF session on the PULSE XL Pro is $150, and $85 for your first one. Sessions are offered through our NAIC ministry membership. See the pricing page for current rates and package options.
